At this point, following two books, a docuseries, a TV show, several interviews and a podcast occasionally pointing thinly veiled fingers at the monarchy, it’s not a crime to wonder when the world would stop hearing about the Sussexes, if indeed there is such a time.
Royal Expert Compares Harry and Meghan’s Situation to King Edward and Wallis Simpson’s
Many predict that there is, and that it’s coming soon. Know who else wrote biographies about being a royal? The abdicated King Edward Viii, and for a while he was the hotshot, and then he wasn’t. Are Harry and Meghan heading towards their post-fame era?
Royal commentator Tom Quinn is seeing parallels between the Sussexes and Edward and Wallis. Even though both quit the royal family for a woman they love – American and divorced, creepy ain’t it? – it’s still not in the same capacity.
Prince Harry was never going to be King, Edward was born to be a king.
Quinn said: “My fear is that Harry will become like Edward VIII and Meghan will become like Mrs Simpson. They lived in this beautiful house in France, but we know they were desperately unhappy.”
He continued: “Edward VIII was a bit like King Lear, where he gives away all his power, but somehow thinks he can still exercise power through his children. I think Edward VIII, when he abdicated and went to live in France, thought he would still be an important figure.”
Noting how Edward’s significance dragged on for a little while and comparing it with the Sussexes ongoing significance, he said: “And he was for a little while, in the same way that Meghan and Harry are kind of significant now because there’s so much coverage and commentary about them.
But that will fade and, unless they can escape all this negative stuff and find something positive that people are interested in, they will become insignificant in the way that Edward VIII became insignificant and very unhappy.”
