Prince Harry Explains Megxit And Leaving UK With Meghan Markle

The world has been waiting to hear for Prince Harry to address the public, firsthand, about his decision to leave the royal family. After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex dropped the news that they would be stepping back from being senior members of the royal family, the two have been relatively quiet. Following their announcement, the public has received updates from Queen Elizabeth II and fellow staff members from the royal family. This all changed the night of January 19th, 2020 when Prince Harry gave a speech at a charity event.

Prince Harry was at an event for Sentebale, a charity organization he created alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006. Sentebale partners with grassroots organizations in Lesotho, Botswana, and Malawi to help children that are victims of extreme poverty and/or have been affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis in these countries. While Prince Harry’s public life is in turmoil, two things have stayed true, the love he has for his family and his passion to support his ongoing charities. So,there was going to be no way he would miss this event to support Sentebale.

Prince Harry knew that this would be his first speaking engagement, not only for the attendees of the night but to the entire world. His speech went a little over four minutes and went into depth about his and Meghan Markle’s decision to step back as senior members of the royal family. Prince Harry started the speech by stating he knew everyone had been hearing quite a lot of speculation over the past few weeks but he wanted them to hear “the truth from me, as much as I can share – not as a Prince, or a Duke – but as Harry, the same person that many of you have watched grow up over the last 35 years, but with a clearer perspective.”

Prince Harry wants the world to put their trust in him and Duchess Markle’s decision because the “woman that I chose as my wife upholds the same values as I do … We both do everything that we can to fly the flag and carry out our roles for this country with pride.” Yet it all had become too much for the new family. Prince Harry and his wife had hoped to “continue serving the Queen, the Commonwealth and my military associations but without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible.”

Prince Harry was very open and honest throughout the speech which made it very emotional. Prince Harry revealed that it was not a decision that was made lightly, and it brought him “great sadness that it has come to this” because “the UK is my home and a place that I love.” He did not give one specific reason for his family’s unexpected departure from the royal family but did point out that the “media is a powerful force, and my hope is one day our collective support for each other can be more powerful because this is so much bigger than just us.” This statement about the media continues the idea that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not want to continue living under the great scrutiny of the press as his mother, Princess Diana, was forced to.

Prince Harry has always been passionate about the charities he funds and/or has created throughout his royal service. So, it was important for him to mention that he will “continue to be the same man who holds his country dear and dedicates his life to supporting the causes, charities and military communities that are so important to me.”

Prince Harry knew the importance of this speech and did an amazing job at expressing his sincere feelings and thoughts to the world. The day after his speech, Prince Harry reunited with his wife and son in Canada, in hopes to start their new life peacefully.
