There’s been a lot of back and forth in recent times on what inspired some of Sentebale’s board, including two of its founders Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso, to leave the charity they founded many years ago in honor of their mothers.
Now, amid the investigation already launched by UK charity watchdog Charity Commission, we’re learning that Harry had lost much of his commitment to the charity in the years since he married Meghan Markle. So maybe it wasn’t as heartbreaking as he made it out to be regarding his departure from the charity.
Sentebale Source Reveals Charity Lost Momentum After Prince Harry Lost Interest
Apparently, Sentebale started showing cracks long before Prince Harry left the Royal Family. According to a source, his fading attention “killed the spirit” of the charity, and this started happening around the time he tied the knot with American actress Meghan Markle.
At first, Harry had been committed and passionate about the cause, but somewhere along the line, this was lost and he rarely got involved with the charity’s proceedings.
For example, Harry had taken four trips to Lesotho between June 2010 and the end of 2015, but his visit in October 2024 marked his first in six years.
Speaking on this, Principal Chief Khoabane Theko, Prince Seeiso’s brother, revealed he knew it wasn’t a good sign when the Prince and his wife would take holidays in Africa but neglect to visit Lesotho.
Amid Sentebale’s fallout, Theko told The Telegraph that the Prince could have put in more efforts to visit often.
“When [Sentebale] was launched, I remember his words quite vividly, because he was very strong in saying ‘my mother, this place, her passion about Africa’ and all that.”
“He’s a loved figure because of his openness, but his loss of interest has totally killed the spirit of the Sentebale’s survival. I haven’t seen him [Prince Harry] since he got himself married.”
Prince Harry May Return to Sentebale To “Fix It” Despite Controversial Exit
Chief Theko, who is also a high ranking member of Lesotho’s parliament, said that he believes Harry might return to the charity one day because it was founded under his mother’s legacy.
He said: “I’m surprised that he’s relinquishing the [charity] at this stage when one expected that he would jealously guard it, because it’s under his mother’s legacy and I thought he would want to die for it.”
“Unless, maybe, he is prepared to come after and come fix it and get it back because I do not believe it comes easy to him to want to give it up, like he’s doing – it’s a little bit strange for me.”
