Prince Harry Retains Control Over Any Adaptation Of ‘Spare’

According to sources, Harry has hit a major roadblock in his bid to adapt his bestselling memoir ‘Spare’ into a movie.

The memoir was published in January 2023, before going on to become the fastest-selling nonfiction book ever on its first day of publication.

When ‘Spare’ hit the shelves, it made headlines, partly due to topics that portrayed his big brother Prince William in a bad light and his careless mention of his kill count in Afghanistan.

If ‘Spare’ is to be adapted into a movie, television show or for the theater, Harry is said to control rights that prevents anyone from dramatizing the contents of the book in ways that does not necessarily suit Harry’s views.

Now of course we don’t think protecting Prince William and Princess Kate is the reason for this. He probably did it to make sure that his late mother Princess Diana and his wife Meghan Markle are not portrayed in any light he does not like. This also makes selling film rights to the book a bit harder.

However, if the book is adapted into a movie, it would no doubt impact the market, judging from how successful its print version is. There’s a chance streaming giant Netflix may want to snag the film rights, since they already have a lucrative contract with the Sussex couple.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been termed “divisive” figures based on their controversial views and criticisms of the Royal Family, while still spotting titles from said institution no less.

With ‘Spare’ film still in the can, for now, Harry is working on another program for Netflix. A documentary that will explore the joys and the sacrifices that goes into playing polo at a competitive level.

Harry is a long-time fan of the sport, and has been playing it professionally for years. In fact, the sport was what united him and lifelong friend Nacho Figueras, who also confirmed his involvement with the series.

The project is filmed primarily at the US Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida, with Emmy award winning filmmaker Miloš Balać producing.
