Earl Spencer Recalls A Heartbroken Young Harry

In his upcoming Diana memoir, Charles Spencer detailed his reaction to the funeral arrangement that would have Prince William and Prince Harry walking behind their mother’s coffin. According to him, it was too big a responsibility for young boys who just lost their mother to endure.

However, he claimed that the Palace shot him down on the notion of tradition and propriety.

In a published excerpt, he recounted: “I could not get over how tiny, and slight, and bereft, Harry looked. Too small to be doing this, I thought, and wondered how on earth this heartbroken child could bear the ordeal of that moment, or how he could possibly be expected to deal with the agony that the day ahead would insist upon.”

He would go on to write that William and Harry “had no privacy, sitting so near to their mother’s coffin, the world caring for them very much while devouring their every move.”

Continuing on in his recollections of Diana’s funeral procession, Earl Spencer recalled that he spent the chief of the day worrying about his young nephews, especially Harry, who he felt wasn’t being properly cared for.

“He needed Diana’s hugs, of course, and they would forever be denied him,” he wrote.

The historian, who is married to his fourth wife and is estranged from several of his children, further noted, “But instead of calm and nurture, he was allowed to spin out of control.

I have often looked back, reckoning that a more caring hand at such points as this would have helped him enormously in the future. Instead, he seemed so very alone in his despair and torment.”
