If you could sum up your life and your existence in one word what would it be? While I give you time to reason it out, Prince Harry seems to have figured out the word that would do his life credit: “Spare”.
Originally third in line to the throne at birth, Harry was only expected to become useful to the monarchy if anything were to happen to his brother. It’s like being an understudy, but for the rest of your life. For Harry, who is now fifth in life after the arrival of his two nephews and a niece, he’s aged into the role, and you could say that he’s almost accepted it.
Whatever anyone thinks of Harry’s “Spare”, it’s a role he was automatically cast in from birth. And it’s a role, which, from time to time, he’s revealed that he’d rather do without.
Royal Expert Predicts Harry’s Memoir Title Will Be A Bitter Account Of His Life
Talking to Express about Harry’s upcoming memoir and what it means for the Royal Family, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams condemned the need for Harry to write such a book, especially when his father would be crowned in the coming weeks.
“When someone refers to themselves as a ‘spare,’ it is, at best, cynical, and at worst derogatory,” Fitzwilliams continued. “As a future Queen, it was sometimes said, Diana’s duty was to produce an ‘heir and a spare.’
“Harry’s choice of title, published almost two years to the day when the Sussexes announced they were stepping back only subsequently to step down as senior working royals, is ominous.” The memoir, arriving on January 10 2023, will reportedly show us the inner workings of the life of the man, who once walked behind his mother’s coffin at the age of 12.
Billed as a “wholly truthful” memoir, Harry is keen to get his story out into the world, and get paid while doing it.
Fitzwilliams continued, “The rift between the brothers is unlikely to be healed by this book. Did he, we will wonder, feel overshadowed as the title suggests?
“He will probably give interviews and there will undoubtedly be serialisations and probably a good deal of controversy. With a title like this, the Palace will be very worried.”
The Palace reportedly is. In fact royal lawyers are on standby in case they need to dispute the contents of the book.
On the other side of the spectrum, there are those who agree that naming the book “Spare” was the right move, as it explains Harry’s situation and position in the monarchy perfectly.
