British royal family news reveals that 99-year old Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and 94-year old Queen Elizabeth have been married for decades and weathered many storms together. So it was with pronounced disappointment that he confronted his son Prince Charles Duke Of Wales nasty marriage battles and ultimate divorce.

Prince Philip Was Not Amused

Dickie Arbiter was the former press secretary to Queen Elizabeth and he told Channel 5’s, Philip: The King Without Crown,’ that, “Philip being a dad and being a father-in-law, he would have been pretty disappointed because he and the Queen believe in the sanctity of marriage.”

In fact, Prince Philip has been praised as a stabilizing figure for the monarchy and he sacrificed his own naval career to support his wife.

Prince Philip Had To Act When Prince Charles Would Not

Arbiter added, “There was disappointment that this great expectation of 1981, this mammoth wedding which everybody viewed as a fairytale wedding, should suddenly crumble.”

The show’s narrator Glynis Barber noted that “As patriarch, the Duke of Edinburgh again took the initiative and tried to counsel the once-happy couple.”

How did he undertake his marriage counselor mission? Apparently, Prince Philip wrote to the couple and suggested ways in which to reconcile and to avoid further unwanted public scrutiny on their marriage.

According to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, Philip, “wrote letters in which he tried to be a marriage counselor if you like, and she wrote back always saying ‘dearest Pa.’ And she said, ‘I think you really underestimate your skills as a marriage counselor.’ And she said, ‘whatever happens, I will always know that you care.'”

Prince Philip Tried To Save Charles and Diana’s Marriage

Philip’s intervention did not work, however, and in 1995 the Queen put an end to what the media had dubbed the War of the Wales.

Following the Princess of Wales’ explosive tell-all BBC television interview, Her Majesty is thought to have lowered the boom and ordered the bickering Charles and Diana to divorce. No doubt this was not an easy decision for the woman who valued loyalty and discretion at all costs. After all her motto is never complain, never explain. But Diana torpedoed that motto in her interview with Martin Bashir, in which she chatted about her and Charles’ extra-marital affairs.
