Prince Philip: How The Royal Family Revealed His Death

Turning to the official Royal Family website, the British Monarchy announced the passing of Prince Philip at 99.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” stated the formal announcement.

The statement also revealed that Philip “passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.” Noting that additional announcements (thought to be about the planned funeral and processions) would “be made in due course,” the post added, “The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss. Friday, 9 April 2021.”

Prince Philip: His Accomplishments and Relationship with Queen Elizabeth

For 65 years, Prince Philip served as Queen Elizabeth’s supportive husband. Although he officially retired in 2017, Philip is known for the changes he helped achieve.

Philip became a champion for Britain, from working with his wife to steer a new path for the monarchy to focusing on science, technology, and the environment as his key causes.

And although today’s public will remember him as the aging husband in the background, his romance with then-Princess Elizabeth was all about love.

A letter since made public to Elizabeth’s parents gushed about their instant connection.

“We behave as though we had belonged to each other for years,” she wrote just after they tied the knot in an official ceremony.

And although Prince Philip was known for his humble approach to his royal position, Elizabeth never hesitated to praise his role in her personal and professional life.

On their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997, Elizabeth referred to Philip as her “strength and stay.”

The Queen also acknowledged his husband’s lack of pretense and humility.

“I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim or we shall ever know,” she added during her wedding anniversary speech.

In particular, Philip sought to guide the way in which the royal family was perceived. When Elizabeth first took the throne in 1952, the clan was viewed as old-fashioned and sadly out-dated. Philip quietly steered the royal family’s image to a vision of seeking change and improvement for both Britain and the world.

“The queen inherited from her father a model of monarchy that was very hands off, old-fashioned and slightly invisible,” pointed out Sarah Gristwood, a historian and the author of “Elizabeth: The Queen and the Crown.”

It was Philip who recognized the power of the TV media, becoming the initial royal family member to agree to a televised interview. He also worked on Queen Elizabeth’s 1953 coronation and crafted a 1969 television documentary about the family.

And although Queen Elizabeth is known for steering clear of showing emotion in public, the loss of her husband will have a real impact on the 94-year-old.
