Royal news and updates tease that Prince William and Kate Middleton are in the U.S. for their three-day visit to Boston. The Prince and Princess of Wales had the perfect “green” outing when they visited Greentown Labs ahead of the Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony.
Located in Somerville, Greentown Labs helps address the issues related to climate change. The royal couple met with some the representatives of some of the organization’s start-ups who shared the latest innovations in climate technology. They also had the chance to see some of the prototypes that were developed in Greentown Labs.
During the 3-day trip, Prince William also met with U.S. President Joe Biden. The royal couple’s travel marked their first major international appearance following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth.
Prince William – Announces Winners of Earthshot Prize
Prince William organized the Earthshot Prize Awards with the primary goal of saving the planet from the destructive effects of climate change. The annual awards fund projects that work towards the same objective.
Each winner will get $1.2 million for the development of their project. There were five winners this year and the Prince of Whales announced them at the awards ceremony that took place in Boston.
“I believe that the Earthshot solutions you have seen this evening prove we can overcome our planet’s greatest challenges,” Prince William said.
He believes that we can change the future by supporting and scaling these innovations. The five winners of the prestigious awards were based in India, Kenya, Australia, United Kingdom, and Oman.
There were 15 finalists this year and they were chosen by a panel that includes Cate Blanchett, Dani Alves, Sir David Attenborough, Ernest Gibson, Sharia, and Prince William. Many celebrities attended the event including Billie Eilish, David Beckham, Annie Lennox, and Ellie Goulding.
The five winners were Mukuru Clean Stoves from Kenya for the Clean Our Air category. Kheyti from India won Protect and Restore Nature, Notpla from the United Kingdom for Build a Waste-free World, The Indigenous Women of the Great Barrier Reef from Australia for Revive Our Oceans, and 44.01 from Oman for the Fix Our Climate category.
It was Earthshot Prize’s second annual ceremony and the event will continue every year until 2030. The nominations for next year’s ceremony were opened on December 5.
