According to the Earth shot website, “Five, one million-pound prize will be awarded each year for the next ten years, providing at least 50 solutions to the world’s greatest environmental problems by 2030.”

According to Kensington Palace, the winners could be, “a wide range of individuals, teams or collaborations—scientists, activists, economists, community projects, leaders, governments, banks, businesses, cities, and countries.”

William’s Earth shot Prize has already been dubbed the Nobel Prize for the environment by some.

It is said that the Duke of Cambridge was inspired by John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot speech, in which the late, former U.S. President urged efforts to put a man on the moon. It is hoped that William’s initiative, not to mention generous prize money, will help convert, “current pessimism surrounding environmental issues into optimism.”

William has been working on the initiative for two years.

“I felt very much that there’s a lot of people wanting to do many good things for the environment and what they need is a bit of a catalyst, a bit of hope, a bit of positivity that we can actually fix what’s being presented,” William said in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme.

According to the initiative’s website, “The prize is centered around five universal goals, described as Earthshots; protect and restore nature, clean our air, revive our oceans, build a waste-free world, and fix our climate. Each year from 2021 to 2030 Prince William and a specially-appointed Earth shot Prize Council will award a £1 million prize to five winners, one for each goal. The prize is supported by a Global Alliance of businesses, philanthropists, organizations, and charities. The first awards will take place in London in Autumn 2021.”

Prince William recently said on the ITV documentary A Planet for Us All, “My grandfather, my father, has been in the conservation, the environmental work for many years. My grandfather was well ahead of his time. My father was ahead of his time. And I really want to make sure that, in twenty years, George doesn’t turn around say, are you ahead of your time? Because if he does, we’re too late.”
