King Charles and William’s wife Princess Catherine are both fighting cancer battles and this has brought the issue of succession into sharp focus.

Is William prepared to become monarch in his 40s? Charles did not ascend to the throne until he was in his 70s. Here’s what one royal expert has to say on the matter.

Royal News – When Will William Ascend to the Throne?

Royal pundit Tina Brown, the author of The Diana Chronicles and The Palace Papers, wrote about the matter of succession in a The New York Times piece. According to Brown, Prince William is in “frightening proximity to ascending the throne.”

Last month King Charles, 75, and Princess Catherine, 42, disclosed that they are receiving cancer treatments. Brown wrote that William and Kate are now anxious about the prospect of heading up the monarchy any time soon.

The couple have three children still in grade school and Brown added that they “hoped for a span of years to parent their children out of the public eye.” Recent events have thrown that wish in doubt.

In January both Charles and Kate underwent major surgeries. On February 5 Charles announced that he was later diagnosed with cancer and last month Kate did the same.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement on behalf of Charles: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.”

Royal Family News – Princess Anne Working Hard

In Kate’s heartfelt March 22 video message she told the world “In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous.”

“The surgery was successful, however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I’m now in the early stages of that treatment.”

According to Brown the royals who are working hardest to keep the monarchy intact are Princess Anne and Queen Camilla.
