Prince William Raises Eyebrows By Hiring Diana’s Divorce Lawyer

British royal family news shows that Prince William made headlines earlier this month when he switched up his legal representation.

He dropped his father’s lawyers, Harbottle & Lewis — who have been on retainer for decades — and hired a curious firm.

William decided to retain his late mother Princess Diana’s legal firm, Mishcon de Reya. They infamously handled her 1996 divorce from King Charles and that got people talking. Here’s what to know!

Is there a hidden agenda or mysterious message behind William’s move? Not necessarily, although some outlets have tried to spin it that way.

An inside source told In Touch: “The decision has nothing to do with” William’s marriage to Princess Catherine.

The changeover is just one of many incremental changes that William is putting in place in order to be ready when it’s his turn to be king.

Other changes that William has allegedly made include “tightening the palace purse strings, revamping the protocol for royal tours and, of course, prioritizing family time.”

Although William has no ulterior motive for making the legal change, the move has nonetheless got tongues wagging and apparently “it’s also rather embarrassing for Charles.”

While William is changing lawyers, the source makes it clear that Charles is not. They note that Harbottle & Lewis partner Gerrard Tyrrell is said to be one of the king’s most trusted advisers, a lawyer who represented the royal family in their 2006 phone hacking lawsuit.

Prince William Made Waves By Hiring Diana’s Former Legal Team

Mishcon de Reya was founded by the late Victor Mishcon. According to Yahoo, Diana once told him that “reliable sources” told her that “a car accident might be staged” and she would “either end up dead or be seriously injured.” Sadly, Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Why Did Prince William Change Lawyers?

Following her tragic death, Mishcon gave his notes regarding her statement to police. It was reported that “he thought Di was just being paranoid at the time.” Another Mishcon attorney, Anthony Julius, has worked with William on a memorial fund in Diana’s name.

The source added that “William knows he can trust them. And he’s also flexing his independence by showing he’s willing to reject the status quo.”
