Guess who has two thumbs and was recently the butt of a backlash? Prince William is who! Ahead of the upcoming world cup, Prince William paid a visit to England coach Gareth Southgate and wished the team luck at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Needless to say, before William, the Prince of Wales, could blink, he was already trending online for allegedly acting like an ass.
Michael Sheen, particularly, dished it out to the 40-year-old, writing, “He can, of course, support whoever he likes and as Pres of FA his role makes visit understandable – but surely he sees holding the title Prince of Wales at same time is entirely inappropriate? Not a shred of embarrassment? Or sensitivity to the problem here? #PrinceofWales.”
Obviously, the backlash was geared towards the fact that he’s supporting England while bearing the title, “Prince of Wales”.
To appease the angry tweeters, William was quick to say that he wholeheartedly supports both nations.
Prince William Clarifies The Country – Countries – He’s Supporting Ahead Of The World Cup
On his first visit to the Welsh Parliament since inheriting the title, the Prince seemed to address the controversies, saying that, even though he’s supported England since he was a young boy, he’s happy to tell “everyone I’m supporting both”.
He added that it would be inappropriate if he just dropped England, especially as he’s forged long-standing relationship with England’s players and supporters.
For this World Cup kicking off on November 20, Wales and England were drawn in the same group.
However, many people have openly said that the two nations being drawn in the same group will be a “dilemma” for the Prince.
What Exactly Did Prince William Say About Supporting England And Wales
“I’m telling everyone I’m supporting both, definitely. I can’t lose,” Prince William said during his official visit to Wales. “I’ve supported England since I’ve been quite small, but I support Welsh rugby and that’s my kind of way of doing it. I happily support Wales over England in the rugby.”
He added: “I’ve got to be able to play carefully with my affiliations because I worry otherwise if I suddenly drop England to support Wales then that doesn’t look right for the sport either. So I can’t do that.”
