We did not know exactly why he was a no-show then, but now we’ve learnt that it took something heavy for him to decide to watch it on his screen like so many of us who couldn’t be present.
Here’s what he has to say about the decision.
Prince William – Reveals How His Wife Princess Kate’s Chemotherapy Kept Him From the Olympics
Prince William chose to put his wife’s health over entertainment as the Olympics headed to Paris this year. According to him, his decision to stay back stemmed from hearing a speech someone made on COVID and recognizing the dangers contracting the disease may pose to his wife.
William shared this little piece of information on Thursday at the Birtley Community Pool in Gateshead. There he met and chatted with Olympic champions Adam Peaty and Tom Dean and Paralympians Maisie Summers-Newton and Louise Fiddes.
He notably said to them: “I was so keen to come but, I have to say, after reading someone’s interview about Covid I decided, because my wife was obviously having chemo, that I didn’t want to risk bringing Covid home.”
He then heartily thanked Peaty for shedding light on the ongoing COVID situation, saying, “So Adam very kindly reminded me that was still a thing. But we watched the whole thing. We were glued to it every day.”
He further revealed his family’s particular sports interests, noting, “Catherine and I both adore swimming. George loves scuba diving. He’s 10 years old. We took him under thinking he would freak out. He absolutely loves it. It’s just introducing him to the world of water.”
He then urged communities to take advantage of the health benefits of swimming at the recently reopened community center, as he added, “We want to replicate this across the country because swimming is such an important part of life. We’re an island nation, we should all have access to learn how to swim.”
