Prince William’s ‘The Newly Crowned Selfie King’ For a Reason

Prince William’s 'The Newly Crowned Selfie King' For a ReasonBritish royal family news reveals that Prince William is one of the most popular UK royals, and together with his wife Princess Catherine they make a winning combination.

It’s safe to say that the monarchy is in good hands for decades to come, with King Charles on the throne and Prince George in the wings.

Prince William Does Selfies

One royal pundit thinks she knows the secret to Prince of Wales’ popularity—in a word, selfies.

Emily Ferguson, is the Express royal editor, and she thinks that William’s willingness to take selfies with the public has endeared him to royal fans. She pointed to William’s Estonia visit this month, saying that “William appears to be taking a new approach to public engagements.”

Rather than keep a stiff upper lip and an arm’s distance, William “fully embraced the crowds and appeared to revel in the dozens of requests for selfies, happily taking people’s phones to take the snap himself.”

It’s kind of hard to imagine King Charles doing this, and impossible to see the late Queen Elizabeth taking a selfie despite her devotion to the citizenry. Of course, William is of a generation that is comfortable with social media and its required selfies.

According to the expert, William has changed his stance on meet and greets and is now spending “longer and longer on walkabouts and is more than happy to pose for endless pictures.”

Selfies Make the Royal Family More Relatable

What is behind William’s decision to ditch his grandmother’s “no selfies” rule? Ferguson believes it could be a willingness to engage younger generations, specifically “the new TikTok generation who prefer visual storytelling.”

While the monarchy is in good hands, there are those, called Republicans, who would like to abolish it. Ferguson adds that William is aware of the “generational divide in support for the monarchy, with young people much less inclined to support it.”

William’s Selfie with Taylor Swift

William scored tons more followers this summer when he posted a selfie with his two oldest children, Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 9, along with Taylor Swift backstage at her Eras concert. The concert was a birthday present for William, and his kids looked thrilled to share the gift.

The pic was taken at Wembley Stadium in London, England and posted to the Prince and Princess of Wales’s Instagram. One analysis determined that William and Kate gained roughly 200,000 Instagram followers in a little over day, because of the selfie.

The trend piggybacked on a 3 percent increase in followers from May to June of last year so we agree that selfies are definitely helping William to grow a loyal fanbase.
