Behind-the-scene Details Of Prince Andrew’s “Disaster” Newsnight Interview Surface
Appearing on Lorraine, Sam McAlister talked about what went behind-the-scenes while they prepared to film Andrew’s 2019 interview, which saw the Duke try to dissociate himself from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
Royal Family – TV Special
The TV special, which lasted for an hour, was supposed to tell Andrew’s side of the story when Virginia Giuffre first accused him of sexual abuse, but all it did was do more damage to his reputation. Shortly after the highly criticized interview, Andrew announced that he would withdraw from public life, promising the authorities that he will help in any way possible to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Sam, the author of “Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews”, said they were alerted that a “special guest” would be watching the interview moments before they started taping.
She explained: “My deputy editor Stuart McLean was there and he goes, ‘oh I’ve brought someone with me.
“Now I’m an ex-criminal defence barrister so I’m thinking, ‘it’s going to be a lawyer – this is over.’ […]
“And then it’s Princess Beatrice.”
The producer claimed that the Duke’s daughter sat across from her father just out of view of the cameras during the whole interview.
She added: “Imagine speaking about the things we had to talk about in that tiny room – face-to-face with her father who is accused of those heinous acts.”
Following the release of the interview, Andrew became a laughingstock on a global scale, with scriptwriter Steven Moffat saying: “What the hell did he think he was doing? Who got him to do it? Why, when the rest of the world was so appalled, did he think it had gone so well? What kind of a man is this?”
