According to a royal source speaking to the Daily Mail, King Charles wants to keep the role for the third in line to the throne, Princess Charlotte, in a “fitting” tribute to the Queen – who also held the title – and also to “honor the line of succession”.
This is coming after speculations arose as to why the title, the Duke of Edinburgh, has been withheld from Prince Edward since Prince Philip’s death.
Royal Source Explains Why Prince Edward Won’t Become the Duke of Edinburgh
If you’re wondering why the Edinburgh title has not been passed on since the death of its bearer in April 2021, then know that King Charles the III is saving the title for his granddaughter Princess Charlotte.
Prince Edward was the one expected to bear the title next, but Palace sources are saying that the King has someone else in mind.
A source said: ‘Discussions are under way, but the favoured outcome for the King is that this title ought to go to Princess Charlotte.
“It would be a fitting way to remember the Queen – who, of course, had the title Duchess of Edinburgh – and a way for His Majesty to honour the line of succession.”
Charlotte is the third in line to the throne after her elder brother and father. This would not have been if the Queen had not changed the rules of Royal primogeniture when Catherine, the Princess of Wales, was pregnant with her first child. This afforded female children the same rights as the male ones.
This made it possible for Princess Charlotte to keep her position even after the arrival of her younger brother, Prince Louis.
The Edinburgh Dukedom is viewed as one of the most senior titles in the Royal Family.
Why Princess Charlotte’s Position in the Monarchy Is “Historically Important”
Unlike so many royal women before her, Princess Charlotte will not lose her position by the arrival of male heirs to the throne. This is the reason Princess Anne and her children’s position in the line of succession is further down than those of her younger brothers and their children.
But Charlotte is the first Princess to hold her place even after the arrival of a younger male heir.
A source said: “Charlotte’s position is historically significant because she is the first female member of the Royal Family whose place in the line of succession will not be surpassed by her younger brother.”
The source added: “So it is constitutionally significant that Charlotte should be given such a corresponding title, because it is not beyond the realms of possibility that she will accede the throne if, for example, Prince George does not have children.”
