It’s safe to say that not all royal wives easily assimilate to the culture and the lifestyle of the royals. It is even more pronounced in this age, when media outlets make a lot of money by writing about the royals and exploiting their huge global fan base.
It wasn’t long after Diana became the Princess of Wales that she got the nickname “the People’s Princess”. She felt that members of the Royal Family were too distant and didn’t exactly connect with the masses. What would she have changed about the Royal Family if she had a chance to do so?
Princess Diana On Why Members Of The Royal Family Didn’t Accept The Change She Felt Needed To Be Made
In 1995, Princess Diana gave an interview to the BBC’s Martin Bashir, which went on to make waves around the world.
The controversial interview has been blamed as one of the causes of her early demise, as it increased the already heightened media attention on her.
Alongside her admittance to knowing her husband Charles cheats on her with another woman, she also opened up about some of the Royal Family’s traditions and how she believes she could improve it.
In a clip featured in upcoming HBO documentary “The Princess”, Bashir asks the late royal, “Do you think you’ll ever be queen?”
She answers, “No, I don’t. No.”
When asked to explain, she goes on, “I don’t think many people would want me to be queen. Actually, when I say ‘many people,’ I mean the establishment that I married into, because they’ve decided that I’m a nonstarter.”

According to her, this view about her from the members of “the establishment” was “because I do things differently.”
Bashir then asked, “Do you think the monarchy needs to adapt and to change?”
Diplomatically, Diana proposes the following: “I understand that change is frightening for people, especially if there’s nothing to go to. It’s best to stay where you are. I understand that.
“But I do think that there are a few things that could change, that would alleviate this doubt, and sometimes complicated relationship between monarchy and public. I think they could walk hand in hand, as opposed to being so distant.”
These days, younger royals, like Prince William and Kate, are embracing Diana’s strategy by getting to communicate and know the people on a personal level.
