Princess Diana’s Big Night Dancing At The 1985 White House Dinner, A Photographer’s Memory

Princess Diana The stories about the legendary night when Princess Diana gracefully danced with a few famous faces continue to abound. After Travolta opened up to the media about the fairytale moment he had with the princess and how badly he wanted to relive that moment again, photographer Souza decided to come clean about his recollections of that white house dinner.

Souza Reveals That Princess Diana Was Visibly Blushing As She Danced With Neil Diamond

In what would have been the late princess’ 60th year, stories about a 1985 dinner and the dances she offered to a few famous faces in attendance have soared up. The princess, however, did not dance with her husband Prince Charles, to who she attended the dinner. While she made Travolta feel like he’s living a dream, another person has recounted that the princess appeared shy as she danced with another famous face, Neil Diamond.

“The one rock-solid remembrance I have is that Diana was visibly blushing when she danced with Neil,” Souza wrote alongside a picture he shared on his Instagram account on Friday. “In the photograph, you can see that her cheeks are a bit red but at the moment it was even more obvious.”‘

He also recalled that Diamond sang a number of songs with the military band that night, including the hit song “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” by Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand.

“My recollection–and I can’t be sure this is correct–is that he continued singing this song as he danced with her,” Souza wrote.

In a previous Instagram post shared on Thursday, the photographer wrote that the princess hit the dance floor with a number of famous faces. “Diana also danced that night with President Reagan, Tom Selleck, Clint Eastwood, and Neil Diamond,” he wrote. “She did not dance with Prince Charles.”

Souza also recalled the moment when Travolta and Princess Diana stepped out on the dance floor: “I made this photograph more than 35 years ago, but remember the moment as if it were yesterday.”

The photographer further shared that he recalled they danced to the military band playing a medley of songs from Saturday Night Fever’s soundtrack.

Travolta’s Fairytale Moment With The Late Princess Diana

In a recent interview with Esquire Magazine, the Saturday Night Fever star discussed the moment when he and Princess Diana made history happen by hitting the dance floor. Diana may have danced with other famous faces, but it was that dance with Travolta that will live on above all the others, with Diana’s iconic black dress even getting to bear the nickname: Travolta dress.

But though the dance was not premeditated, it was by no means the workings of chance. Princess Diana had whispered to the then First Lady Nancy Reagan that she would be thrilled to dance with John Travolta. The First Lady then told Travolta to ask Diana for a dance, but Travolta felt daunted by the thought, replying that he couldn’t possibly ask the princess to dance with him. He later caved in on the First Lady’s insistence.

He recently recalled the almost 15-minute dance with both joy and gratefulness: “Think of the setting. We were at the White House. It’s midnight. The stage is like a dream. I approach her, touch her elbow, invite her to dance,” he said. “She spins around and gives me that captivating smile, just a little sad, and accepts my invitation. And there we were, dancing together as if it were a fairytale.”

He also added: “Who could ever imagine something like that would happen to them someday? I was smart enough to stamp it in my memory as a very special, magical moment.”
