Well, part of the reason is allegedly the fact that Meghan felt like a fish out of water. The U.K. is not Meghan’s home. The customs and traditions associated with The Firm were things unfamiliar to Meghan and could largely be seen by Meghan as “much to do about nothing.” Meghan may also have felt isolated, and indeed some raised the specter of racism within the British royal family seeing as some felt she was given the cold shoulder. Whether that was due to her mixed-race status or just because some see Meghan as a rank opportunist is another question entirely.
Now, it’s possible that one explanation for Queen Elizabeth’s behavior has to do with maintaining the dignity, reputation, and overall image of the crown. Because Meghan is so different from all the other women Prince Harry has courted in his life, who fans might feel are more suited to life as a British royal, it’s possible that the Queen didn’t want anyone thinking she, above all people, was turning up her nose.
Then too, maybe Queen Elizabeth is actually a very kind woman in general. Maybe image and politics had nothing to do with the British monarch’s behavior toward Meghan. As well, hasn’t anyone noticed how old Queen Elizabeth is? Science has shown that people who are kind as Queen Elizabeth was are at least 44% less likely to die early than others! Maybe Queen Elizabeth just enjoys seeing the looks of delight on the faces of those to whom she decides to show favor.
What exactly though, did Queen Elizabeth offer Meghan before Megxit took place? According to some reports, Queen Elizabeth sent Meghan an invitation to Windsor Castle before she’d even married Prince Harry. That’s practically unheard of if one is to believe British publications. Then, there’s the fact that Queen Elizabeth gave Meghan a ticket to ride the royal train. That happened only a month following Meghan’s wedding to Harry. This too was something Meghan got to enjoy that most do not.
Reportedly, everything the Queen did was to get to know Meghan in a personal manner. No doubt Queen Elizabeth wanted to know what kind of person would be joining The Firm and whether Meghan had “the right stuff.” Yet, it’s also plain that Queen Elizabeth wanted to bring Meghan into the family as much as possible. After all, this would have benefitted Meghan and Prince Harry both and there is no question that the British monarch loves her grandson and wants him to be happy.
As everyone knows though, neither Prince Harry nor Meghan Markle remained happy in the U.K. or with their duties as senior members of the British Royal family. Nothing Queen Elizabeth could do or say was destined to convince the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to remain in Great Britain.
Apparently, even monarchs like Queen Elizabeth come to understand that sometimes, no good deed goes unpunished.
