British royal family news shows that for the last 70 years Queen Elizabeth has been the lady in charge of the UK’s monarchy. She is a firm but loving leader and this year celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, the commemoration of seven decades on the throne.
She no doubt is used to being the one who issues the orders, but it seems that there actually is someone who instructs Her Majesty! Read on to find out who that is and how the queen responds to “direction.”
Royal Family News – The Queen is 96-years Old
It seems that the only person who tells the queen what to do is, “the woman under the bonnet,” the name she has for her GPS! According to the Daily Mail the 96-year-old queen is more than willing to let the disembodied satnav voice tell her where to go.
According to sources, she does not need a navigation system when she drives her Bentley because she knows every inch of her Windsor, Sandringham and Balmoral estates. But, she does use one off her estates or when with a chauffeur.
Apparently the good natured queen finds, “the female voice of her GPS rather amusing … although she famously hates back seat drivers – the Queen doesn’t tolerate anyone lecturing her while driving, not even her late husband could tell her what to do.’”
Royal Family News – The Queen Is Into Technology
A source told the outlet of the queen, “She has a brilliant sense of humor and a very quick wit. It always tickles people to hear her remark, ‘it’s the woman under the bonnet again’ when she hears her voice.”
Until recently the queen always preferred to drive herself when possible and she has a flotilla of private cars including Range Rovers, Land Rovers and Jaguars. And here’s something very interesting, “she is the only person in the country who has no need to hold a valid license.”
Royal Family News – The Queen Does Not Have A License
The queen also knows her way around an automobile, having been trained as a mechanic and driver in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War.
Apparently her zest for driving has startled at least one guest, Saudi Arabia’s late King Abdullah who visited her Balmoral estate in 1998.
According to British diplomat Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, “Abdullah was not used to being driven by a woman, let alone a queen,” and the, “Queen’s devil-may-care attitude behind the wheel, as she chatted to the prince, was said to have made him rather nervous … through his interpreter, the Crown Prince implored the Queen to slow down and concentrate on the road ahead.”
