Graham Smith is the CEO of Republic, an anti-monarchy organization and he recently told Express.co.uk, that no one in the royal family, except the monarch, should have their funeral and attendant security costs paid for by the UK taxpayer. Republic is well known for advocating that the monarchy be done away with and the sovereign replaced by an elected, democratic head of state.
Royal Family News: Who Told The Queen Use Her Own Money To Pay For Prince Philip’s Funeral?
Smith made his feelings known by stating the UK taxpayer should not pay for the funeral of the monarch’s spouse. “I can understand with the monarch if you are the head of state and there is a state funeral offered then you might understand why the taxpayer would pay for it,” he said. “I think it would be childish to suggest we do not do that with the Queen. I think with Prince Philip he is a private citizen, he happens to be the husband of the monarch. They have got plenty of their own money they can arrange and afford their own funeral.”
As if to reinforce his adamant beliefs, Smith added, “I don’t see why the taxpayer should be asked to do that. It will cost the taxpayer a lot anyway because of the policing. I am sure it will be a public event which will attract a number of reasonably large crowds.”
He then went for the jugular by saying, “I think that it is not appropriate, and I hope that point is being made clear to them while Prince Philip is still alive.”
The CEO of Republic Doesn’t Want To Pay For Prince Philip’s Funeral
Smith might be heartened to learn that The Mirror reported that Prince Philip has, “expressed a preference for something a little more simple.”
Royal watcher Zahra Mulroy wrote, “He may be entitled to a full-blown state funeral, but the Duke has expressed a preference for something a little more simple – and he’s been closely involved with the arrangements, which are being coordinated by the Lord Chamberlain’s Office at Buckingham Palace.”
“Rather than lying in state at Westminster Abbey, it’s thought that the Duke’s body will lie at St James’ Palace instead … The public would not be allowed to view the body.”
The Independent has also reported on this issue saying that Philip does not want, “the fuss” of a full state funeral. So that settles the matter?
