Royal Family News – What Does The Royal Family Eat On Christmas?
The royal family is like every other clan around the globe when it comes to holiday festivities and traditions. Like many families, the Windsor Christmas tradition involves going to grandma’s house! This year, as in years past, the royals are expected to gather together at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate to wait for Santa Claus and his reindeer to drop off presents.
Despite all of the formalities the family is known for, they seem to let loose and enjoy themselves at Christmas, with one fun tradition dating to the early 1900s. In this case, every year the royals reportedly weigh themselves before they sit down to a delicious Christmas dinner and again after the feast is finished. I’m not sure I’m ready to adopt that particular (peculiar, too!) tradition into my Christmas routine, maybe next year!
The Royals Have A Feast
Like most families, the royals stick to a tried and true holiday menu, with something for everyone to look forward to.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady was in charge of many royal holiday menus, and according to the feast master, the royal menu involves, “the same meal every year.” What sort of protein do they favor? According to McGrady, “They didn’t do hams or anything, just traditional turkeys.”
“We did three turkeys for the Queen and her family in the royal dining room, one for the children’s nursery and then more for the 100 or so staff, so everyone had a Christmas lunch.”
What does the queen like to have with her turkey? “The turkey is served with mashed and roast potatoes, chestnut or sage and onion stuffing, cranberry sauce and bread sauce.”
When it comes to vegetables, she prefers the old standbys: brussels sprouts, carrots and roast parsnips. It could be argued that the best course is saved for last–the dessert option.
That’s when the royal Christmas pudding comes out, “decorated in holly, doused in brandy, and the Palace steward would carry it, flaming, into the royal dining room.”
The former chef also spilled that the queen’s pre-meal drink is a gin and dubonnet cocktail followed by a glass of German white wine to accompany the main course. Bon appetite!
