British royal family news reveals that Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton were all guilty of going against the grain in epic fashion at least once (that we know of!).

Here are the occasions each was caught out doing something that stunned the public.

#1 Kate Middleton

Did you know that Duchess Kate loves to shop in London’s high streets? She counts Gap, Zara and John Lewis as faves and believe it or not she goes to get her own groceries when at home in Norfolk. This is not something most royals are associated with but she has even been seen at the local Sainsbury’s and Waitrose with her children in tow.

#2 Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth is one of the most recognizable public figures on the planet. But on one memorable occasion, she managed to escape the palace incognito. On V-E Day, May 8, 1945, when she was still known asvPrincess Elizabeth, she did something totally unexpected.

She and her sister Princess Margaret decided to ditch Buckingham Palace in order to enjoy the celebrations marking the end of World War II.

Elizabeth was still a teenager at the time and Margaret was just 14. They were accompanied by their cousin Margaret Rhodes, a former lady-in-waiting named Jean Woodroffe and an entourage of 14 others!

Later the queen would describe the outing as, “one of the most memorable nights of my life.”

That night the UK celebrated in the streets and the queen joined in. According to Rhodes, the party also did the conga through the front door of The Ritz hotel, raising eyebrows. No word on whether or not Elizabeth and Margaret were grounded for their daring act!

#3 Princess Diana

Princess Diana was no stranger to rule bending. Did you know her infamous blue sapphire engagement ring was chosen from a catalog? The very same ring that Kate Middleton wears every day was selected from the Garrard catalog instead of being custom made.

She took Princes William and Harry to McDonald’s where she would tell stunned staff that they liked the toys and permitted the kids to ride the London tube and buses. But she also had a habit of sneaking out with her own friends.

According to actress Cleo Rocos’ book The Power of Positive Drinking, one time she, Freddie Mercury, Kenny Everett and Diana were watching The Golden Girls before they all trooped over to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a well-known gay club. Everett dressed Diana in a military jacket, sunglasses and cap and passed her off as a gay male model and no one recognized the princess in their midst!
