British royal family news shows that today Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was given a state funeral, attended by 2,000 mourners including dignitaries and VIPs the world over. Her oldest son and heir King Charles was front and center at the solemn ceremony and many royal fans wondered why there was an empty seat in front of him, in the midst of the very crowded St. George’s Chapel. Here is the significant reason why.
Royal Family News – Queen Elizabeth Laid to Rest
After viewers saw the empty seat in front of Charles during Queen Elizabeth’s committal service on Monday, some speculated that the empty chair is meant to honor a fallen member of the royal family. That is not the case.
The chair in front of a monarch, “is always kept open in these situations so that the monarch can have a clear view of the proceedings from the second row in instances where they are not seated in the first row.”
According to People, “Similarly, there was an empty seat directly before the late Queen Elizabeth during previous royal events, such as the weddings of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank as well as Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle.”
There Is A Practical Reason For An Empty Seat
Charles has waited a lifetime to be King and he is undoubtedly well-versed in his new role. But there are some adjustments to get used to. For instance, “he will no longer sing along with the British national anthem, as seen at the Queen’s funeral. This is a tradition since the song is to the monarch — it was formally known as “God Save the Queen” throughout Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign, the longest in history.”

Royal Family News – RIP Queen Elizabeth
Before today’s ceremony the nation was in a ten-day mourning period. During this time there were numerous events held to honor Queen Elizabeth. At one point all eight of her grandchildren made appearances at one or another event prior to the funeral.
On Saturday, her grandchildren held a vigil at their grandmother’s coffin for 15 minutes in Westminster Hall. The prior day the queen’s children did the same.
The Queen will now be laid to rest with her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, and her parents.
