UK Royal Family news reveals Tuesday, October 20 is World Osteoporosis Day and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, has a personal message to impart as the president of the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS). Both her mother Rosalind Shand and grandmother Sonia Keppel died as a result of the bone wasting condition.

Camilla has released a video message in which she describes the pain of seeing her mother succumb to the, “devastating disease.” “In those dark old days it was seldom discussed,” she said, “rarely diagnosed and usually attributed to old women with so-called “dowager’s humps.”  On Tuesday, Camilla will host a tea for the Royal Osteoporosis Society.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes painful, debilitating, and sometimes fatal fractures. In particular, the wrist, hip, and spine are affected and over three million people in the UK have the disease.

The ROS is the only UK-wide charity devoted to enhancing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis.

The charity provides free support and information to people affected by osteoporosis and broken bones, and its hotline receives over 11,000 inquiries annually.

“My family and I knew nothing about it and were at a loss to know how we could help alleviate the terrible pain she suffered,” Camilla added. But she said that since her mother’s death 26 years ago, big advances have been made in the treatment and research of osteoporosis.

In the video she states, “’We know it is vital to eat the right food, to take regular and weight-bearing exercise and, so importantly, to educate young people as to how to look after their bone health.”

She also recognized how COVID has restricted our physical movement. “It has, of course, been more challenging to get out and about this year, but we must all ensure, for the sake of our bones, that we stay as active as possible, even in the midst of a pandemic.”

Camilla went on to say, “We can therefore mark this World Osteoporosis Day with hope and confidence that, together, we will be able to bring an end to this “silent” disease that has brought such misery and pain to millions of people across the globe.”

Prior to her Tuesday tea, Camilla spoke to the next recipient of the Duchess of Cornwall Award, Christine Sharp, who is a long-standing volunteer of the ROS charity.
