British royal family news reveals that the public does not tire of news about the late Princess Diana. A new movie about her is in the works, titled Spencer, and it is already stirring up controversy.

Namely, royal fans are wondering how one of the world’s most iconic women, a Brit, will come off sounding when portrayed by an American?

Twilight star Kristen Stewart landed the leading role in the biopic Spencer last year and immediately there was an outcry over the casting of an American actress to play Princess Di.

And yet newly releases photos from the set of Spencer show that Stewart is a near identical twin to the late Diana. Pics were released Friday afternoon from the set in Frankfurt, Germany where a hotel is being used as the Sandringham Estate.

Stewart is seen to look spot on to the late Diana, with a short bob and a brooding expression.

But will this be enough to sway fierce critics of the casting choice who set the Twitterverse on fire? Questions and comments like this were posted: “Couldn’t you have found a British actress? Plenty of British actresses who would have been better for this role, Princess Diana was classy, Kristen is not.” Ouch!

It forced filmmaker Pablo Larraín to defend his decision to cast the American. He told Deadline, “Kristin is one of the greatest actors around today.”

In one of the released pics, Stewart is seen in a replica of Diana’s red coat and black veiled black hat and the resemblance is startling.

The movie captures the fictionalized events of a long weekend at Sandringham when the Princess of Wales became aware she, “needed to veer from a path that put her in line to one day be queen.”

The story takes place over three days during Christmas at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England.

According to Pablo, the film is not about Diana’s tragic death, but about her marriage to Charles and the love for her children Prince William and Prince Harry.

“She’s a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realizes that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles,” the director said.
