British royal family news divulges that there are real royal concerns the day after King Charles announced his coronation plans. Too glitzy, too Hollywood, too costly? No, just the opposite and that has certain quarters crying foul. Honestly, Charles can’t win for losing on this one. Republicans want to do away with the monarchy altogether and there are plenty of Royalists who look forward to Charles’ reported “slimmed down” reign. But as soon as he announces a plan to cut back on the lavishness, he’s the target of scorn. Let’s unpack what the fuss is all about.

Royal Family News – Charles Is In Charge

Yesterday it was reported that King Charles’ coronation ceremony would be one third as long as in years past, and only around 2,000 guests would be invited, down from an estimated 8,000. He appears to be looking to cut costs and show the naysayers that the monarchy is relevant and not a giant tax drain.

In response, some royal experts complained that running a K-Mart-ish Blue Light Special coronation would be a major mistake, a missed op to show the world the greatness of the UK.

Commentators declared that a, “cut-price Coronation,” would waste an opportunity to show the, “soft power of the monarchy, as scenes of pomp and pageantry would draw the eyes of the world to Britain.”

According to the Daily Mail, “The Queen’s state funeral drew tourists to London and Windsor and the Coronation could provide a similar boost.”

The Coronation is expected to occur next summer, at Westminster Abbey, although no date has been officially announced.

Historian Andrew Roberts said that the timing would provide, “a much-needed celebration after a winter dominated by the cost of living crunch and the war in Ukraine.”

Royal Family News – Should the Coronation Be Skimpy?

He said that, “Coronations come once in a generation. If this is seen as a cut-price Coronation it will backfire. This is a chance to represent the people and the nation on a global stage. It would be very sad if that was wasted.”

And yet, there has been a great cry recently against the money that the monarchy spends on itself, right down to the curtains in William and Kate’s house. Some Royalists remember the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, which was opulence defined. Charles has made one concession however, he will use the gold coach that his mother used, the very symbol of “soft power” wouldn’t you say?
