Royal Family News: Did The Queen Slap Down Sophie Wessex’s Wish To Become A Princess?

British royal family news divulges that most royal watchers consider Queen Elizabeth to have a favorite daughter-in-law: Sophie, Countess of Wessex. But now there is a spilled story that may cast doubt on that theory.

Sophie wed Edward in 1999 and they have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. Did the queen smackdown Sophie when she requested the title of ‘Princess’? She is not known as that today, so something had to have happened!

Royal Family News – Queen Elizabeth Does Not Suffer Fools!

The Queen is thought to be particularly fond of her youngest son and his wife Sophie. There were even rumblings that they were the chosen few to be in a bubble at Christmas before the lockdown rules.

Both Sophie and her husband were given the same privilege as other royal newlyweds when the Queen bestowed a new title upon them and they became the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

But Sophie had another title in mind. Royal watcher Katie Nicholl wrote in Vanity Fair, “The Countess of Wessex had wanted to be known as Princess Sophie, but the Queen would not allow it.” And we all know that what the queen wants the queen gets—sorry about that Meghan Markle!

Royal Family News – Sophie Is A Favorite Of Queen Elizabeth?

So why did the Queen reject Sophie? There is protocol and tradition that goes with the royal title of Princess. Only women born into the Royal Family, directly descended from the Queen, are known as Princesses, such as Princess Charlotte, Princess Eugenie, and Princess Beatrice.

That was not the case for Sophie who married into the Royal Family. This means that her titles are always related to her husband’s, i.e., she is known as the Countess of Wessex because Edward carries the Earldom.

In another case of title envy, she said, “Despite being given the title of Duke of Cambridge, William let it be known on his wedding day through one of his key aides that he wanted to continue to be known as Prince William. By default, Kate is likely to be addressed as Princess Catherine.”
