Let’s break down how this amazing lady sends secret signals to her staff, with the public none the wiser!

The Queen Is A Good Communicator

The ways that the queen places and moves her purse to communicate are amazing. According to Grazia, if the queen puts her purse on the table at dinner, “staff are to take it as a cue that she wants the event to end in the next five minutes. If she places it on the floor, it signals that she is not enjoying the conversation she is currently in and wants to be rescued by her lady-in-waiting.” Clever!

Her Majesty Is Amazing

Additionally, historian Hugo Vickers says that that Queen Elizabeth, “always drapes her handbag over her left arm, so when she switches it, it’s an obvious sign that she’s bored and wants to move along. This move is a discreet directive that she would like staff to help end the conversation.”

As he states, “It would be very worrying if you were talking to The Queen and saw the handbag move from one hand to the other.” Nonetheless, he states that her staff have been directed to, “always attempt to interject in a friendly and nonchalant way before directing them to another guest.”

The Queen Is Uber Polite

As you might expect, the Queen isn’t the only royal to use these little tricks of the trade. Apparently the late Diana, Princess of Wales, “was famous for … the placement of her clutch bag when she stepped out of a car.”

The late Diana herself called her move her, “cleavage clutch.” Why? Because it protected her, “modesty from the prying lenses of the waiting photographers as she got out of the car. This move became a staple for the princess and she was often pictured holding her clutch bag close to her chest.” Very smart!

Additionally, the handbag designer Anya Hindmarch helped the Princess of Wales choose purses in West London. She told The Telegraph: “She was a very loyal customer and a lot of fun… she would come and see us with no bodyguards or any fuss.”

“We used to laugh when we designed what she called her ‘cleavage bags’ – little satin clutches which she would cover her cleavage with when she stepped out of cars.”
