British royal family news reveals that few royal experts are more expert than Clive Irving whose latest tome on The Firm drops January 5. It’s titled The Last Queen: Elizabeth II’s Seventy Year Battle to Save the House of Windsor.
In his day he has seen a lot happen with the monarchy and in a recent interview with Glamour he spilled some of the juicy tidbits to be found in his book.
When asked about his jaw dropping assertion that Queen Elizabeth II will be the last Queen of England he pulled no punches saying, “This is … why I wrote the book. I feel there have been three great queens in the history of England: Elizabeth I, Victoria, and Elizabeth II. Looking at the future of the monarchy and the future of the Windsor brood, if you look at the line of succession, it is clearly a male line of succession.”
“The way I feel about the present Queen is that she is such a distinguished and singularly remarkable woman and a monarch—she is almost an impossible act to follow. Odds are she will be the last Queen, because she has [three] male successors in a time when it’s difficult to know what will happen in the future [to the monarchy].”
What Does Clive Irving Think About Prince Charles?
His commentary on Prince Charles wasn’t quite as glowing. He said, “King Charles seems almost bizarrely regressive, and Camilla doesn’t work for anybody.”
He also thinks that privilege can create self-indulgent people and, “Charles is such a classic example of this—an entitled, self-pitying man who was entirely unsuited to the kind of relationship that Diana demanded. For some reason, Camilla worked out how to deal with him.”
When asked his thoughts on Harry and Meghan, he had a surprising take on the rogue couple. “I don’t understand the hostility toward Meghan Markle. It’s different in the U.S. than in the U.K. The Brits somehow think she stole him away and think he is Prince Charming—that you can’t blame him, and that she made him leave. It’s all nonsense.
“There is an outbreak of anger as though Harry was deserting the ship, but he wants his own life as a distinctive figure.”
Clive Irving Has A Stunning Take On Philip And The Queen’s Relationship
Lastly, Irving thinks that Philip and the Queen have forged, “a very successful marriage. This last year together in confinement was very touching, like reliving the early days of their young marriage and discovering each other again. The Queen always made a point of saying that she depends on him and the support he has been to her.” Which goes to show that behind every good woman stands a good man?
