Inside Kate Middleton’s Relationship with Her Father-in-law
The Duchess of Cambridge attended the G7 summit earlier this month with Prince William, Prince Charles, Camilla and Queen Elizabeth the II, where the royals welcomed world leaders to the event. The royals were caught on camera arriving at the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, on Friday, June 11, as Charles turned to welcome Kate and his eldest son, Prince William, 38.
“Hello, Grandpa! How are you?” Kate appeared to say in the clip released on ITV News, as she greeted the Duke of Cornwall, 72, with a warm smile.
The nickname is actually relatable to the Duke who became a grandfather for the fifth time earlier this month when the Sussexes’ daughter Lilibet arrived.
Prince Charles became a grandpa for the first time in 2013 when Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed Prince George, 7. Prince William and Kate Middleton are also parents to Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3.
Prince Charles further has two grandchildren from his second son Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle: Archie, 2, and Lilibet, who is a week and a few days old.
Though Prince Charles hasn’t seen Archie in over a year, he still wished the toddler a happy birthday when he turned 2 in May.
When Kate joined the royal family 10 years ago in 2011, Charles released a statement revealing how “delighted” he is to have the St. Andrew’s University alum join the family. The two have remained close since then, with the Duchess releasing pictures of the Duke’s moments with her children that she’d taken herself.
The relationship that Prince Charles has with Kate Middleton is in contrast with the one he recently has with his second son Prince Harry, who currently lives in Montecito, California.
Harry first revealed that his father had stopped picking his calls when he and his wife resided in Canada during his sit-down with Oprah.
“Charles thinks these matters could have been easily addressed in private,” a source shared exclusively with Us Weekly at the time, noting that Charles “does not agree with Harry trashing his whole family in public.”
In multiple interviews that followed, Harry spoke about his father and the hurt he caused him when he was growing up.
“The general consensus within the royal family is to ignore Harry’s behavior, to avoid fanning the flames, but Charles is finding it hard to hold back. He really wants to defend himself,” a source told US Weekly.
