British royal family news shows that today Kate Middleton surprised royal fans when she joined her husband Prince William in honoring Australians and New Zealanders killed in WWI at an event to mark Anzac Day.
Monday Prince William attended a memorial service at The Cenotaph war memorial in London and he laid a wreath of poppies on behalf of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth. William will be king after his father Prince Charles, and Charles will ascend the throne after his mother. Her Majesty is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this year, marking a 70 year reign.

After his visit to the Cenotaph William arrived at Westminster Abbey for the Anzac Day Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving. There Kate joined him in a cream coat dress she wore at their daughter Princess Charlotte’s christening in 2015.
Kate and Prince William wore red poppy pins, a tradition which pays homage to military members who have died in war.

John McCrae wrote the poem “In Flanders Fields” about World War I. The opening stanza reads: In Flanders fields the poppies blow …” and it is believed to have given inspiration to the tradition of wearing the poppies to commemorate the dead. The royal family, as well as UK citizens wear such pins when honoring military veterans who sacrificed their lives for their country.
Anzac Day is marked each year to commemorate the first major battle involving Australian and New Zealand troops during World War I. The first Anzac Day was held in London in 1916, when King George V attended a memorial service at Westminster Abbey.
