Royal Family News – Kate Middleton Highlights Mental Struggles Teens Undergo

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Week, the Duchess of Cambridge is turning focus to the struggles of teens who have dealt with the disruption of school life amid Coronavirus in her latest YouTube video.

This leads the way as the first of several key interventions that she and Prince William will make as they highlight Mental Health Awareness Week in the U.K.

The video features a pre-recorded phone call that took place last fall between Kate, 39, and a teen girl and her mother who are featured in the Duchess’ new book Hold Still: A Portrait Of Our Nation in 2020. The work is a book of photographs that captures and relates to how Britons coped during the pandemic.

Romy’s photo was taken on the last day of exams before graduation, which had to take place virtually.
“I feel I know you so well just by looking at the photograph,” the Duchess told Romy. “It’s so important that your mum’s really highlighted how much young people have been affected by lockdown and all the disruptions that you had with work and with school and everything. How has it been for you and your friends?”

Romy then related that the picture had been taken on what was supposed to be their last day of big exams, but they were denied the proper celebration that would have gotten them into a new stage of their lives.

“It’s really important to tell the story of young people. And also making sure and highlighting and the support that they and you all need as well,” Kate said.

“To be honest, with mental health, it hasn’t been great,” Romy opened up. “People have become more open about it because it’s so common now that people are struggling with it and it’s natural to struggle with it in these circumstances.”

Kate, who has put mental health support and awareness at the forefront of her royal work, understood where the teen girl was coming from, agreeing that it’s no longer something that someone should be ashamed of when they go through periods of mental stress.

“Absolutely, because everyone’s experienced something together in a way so there’s no shame in talking about it. That’s what we have been really keen to do, is to break that stigma, and try to start conversations around mental health. It’s great to hear that people are being a lot more open about it,” the royal mom of three added.

Kate Middleton And Prince William’s Upcoming Engagements

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are set to take part in a number of programs happening in the West Midlands, England. Their various visits will center on local organizations that work to support children and young people with their mental health issues and improve their overall sense of self, especially in association with nature and how it relates to mental health, according to a statement released by Kensington Palace.

This year’s theme of mental health revolves around the critical role nature plays in helping to improve our mental wellbeing.

This Friday, the couple will lead voices from around the world in the Mental Health Minute, a special broadcast with an outreach of more than 20 million people via 500 radio stations.

The program will also support Shout 85258, the U.K.’s first free, confidential text support service, which the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge launched in May 2019 alongside the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
It connects people that need help to clinical supervisors and trained volunteers who offer advice in various situations.
