While the royal mom-of-three wanted to be there, she also knew that the brothers would appreciate the privacy as they remember their mother, Princess Diana, who died at the age of 36 in 1997. Kate, though not being there in person, was said to have watched the unveiling from afar, and will get another special opportunity to pay a visit to the statue with her husband and children.

Also, since the statue is standing in Kensington Palace grounds, she’d barely miss seeing it frequently.
The statue depicts the late Princess of Wales with children of different backgrounds, referencing her love of children, irrespective of their race.

Prince William And Harry’s Private Unveiling Of Princess Diana’s Statue

Late Princess Diana, mother to Prince William and Harry, would have celebrated her 60th birthday this July 1st, and her sons want to remember her legacy in a special and intimate way.

The brothers commissioned the project in 2017, writing in a joint statement at the time: “It has been 20 years since our mother’s death and the time is right to recognize her positive impact in the UK and around the world with a permanent statue. Our mother touched so many lives. We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy.”

Despite the recent reported rift between both brothers, they came together at the event in honor of their mother and pulled off the green cloth covering the statue, to the cheers of the few people present.
There were just a handful of guests at the event: Prince William, Prince Harry, Diana’s two sisters, her brother and members of the statue committee.

“Prince William and Prince Harry will attend a small event to mark the unveiling of a statue they commissioned of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace on Thursday 1st July,” a spokesperson for the palace told Us in a statement. “In addition to close family of Diana, Princess of Wales, members of the statue committee, the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, and garden designer, Pip Morrison, will also be present.”

“Out of respect for [Prince] Harry and William, [the royal family] wanted it to be just about Diana’s sons and not a huge public affair,” a source told Us Weekly. “Kate was definitely supporting William while physically not being there and really wanted to attend, but the family as a whole decided it was best for the kids and her to stay home.”

Prince William, Kate Middleton and their children: Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3, are expected to visit the statue at a later time.

Harry flew in from Montecito, California, to attend the unveiling. A source close to the royal revealed that his visit to the U.K. would be fleeting, as he will soon be returning to his wife Meghan and two kids: Archie, 2, and 1-month-old Lilibet. It’s not about her and shouldn’t be. Glad it was just the brothers.
