Royal Family News: Kate Middleton’s Name Keeps Changing Here’s Why

Her husband is Prince William and together they are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. But the title wave will change once his father, and heir to the throne, move up the ranks.

Before we move forward, let’s take a step back. Currently, Kate Middleton is the Duchess of Cambridge. This hereditary title was given to her by Queen Elizabeth when Kate married Prince William ten years (and three kids) ago.

But wait, there’s more! Kate is also entitled to call herself the Countess of Strathearn. This is the proper way to address Kate when she is in Scotland, a title was also given to her by the queen upon marriage to Prince William. And you thought a toaster was a nice gift.

Kate’s title in Northern Ireland is Lady Carrickfergus, and once again she has William and her marriage to him to thank for it.

One day Kate’s titles will change–some families hand down jeans and shoes–some hand down titles—it’s all very hoity-toity, not to be confused with hoi polloi.

So, when Charles becomes King, Kate becomes the Princess of Wales. That’s because he is now Prince Charles Prince of Wales but in due time Prince William will become Prince of Wales, thus Kate will become Princess of Wales, got it? Good.

Furthermore, William will become Duke of Cornwall when Charles becomes king since it is a name granted to the heir apparent. This would make Kate the new Duchess of Cornwall, a title that is now held by Charles’s wife Camilla.

Then there is the Scottish Rothesay title also typically held by the heir apparent, so when William gains it so, too, will Kate making her the Duchess of Rothesay. Then there is the big kahuna title, the title of all titles, Queen Consort. She will be known as this when William is king since she has no constitutional power and is a queen in title only. Whew.
