Royal Family News: King Charles Expresses Stunning Mea Culpa For Colonialism In First Speech to A Foreign Leader

British royal family news reveals that King Charles did not shy away from awkward controversy in his first major speech to a foreign leader. To wit, the new monarch indicated that he intends to address the festering issue around the legacy of colonialism.

King Charles met with South African president Cyril Ramaphosa, and said that, “aspects of the relationship between the two countries provoked profound sorrow.” But he set forth an intention to come together in cooperation. Ramaphosa’s visit was planned before Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September. On Tuesday he was greeted by more than 1,000 soldiers, 230 horses, seven military bands and two state coaches.

His Majesty has indicated that he wants to keep the Commonwealth together, even as some countries have expressed varying degrees of willingness and determination to leave the umbrella group.

In 2021 Charles denounced the, “appalling atrocity of slavery, which forever stains our history,” during a visit to Barbados when the country breached its ties to the Royal Family in order to become an independant republic.

In early 2022 Charles indicated his regret about the UK’s role in the slave trade. He told Commonwealth leaders, “I cannot describe the depths of my personal sorrow at the suffering of so many as I continue to deepen my own understanding of slavery’s enduring impact.”

And now, with his latest remarks made last night at Buckingham Palace, King Charles vowed that he will ensure that Britain recognizes, “the wrongs which have shaped our past.”

The speech was given at a state banquet held to mark a two-day state visit by President Ramaphosa and the South African delegation. Members of the South African contingent met with the King and Queen Consort, as well as the William and Kate the Prince and Princess of Wales.

In all, 163 people, “including senior politicians from both countries were present for an opulent banquet as the Palace pulled out all the stops in the first state visit of the King’s reign.”

Royal Family News – Charles Admits to Past Wrongs

Charles put forth his mea culpa even before the banquet began, referencing Britain’s colonial history with South Africa, which, “provoked profound sorrow.”

The monarch told his guests that, “South Africa, like the Commonwealth, has always been a part of my life.” He added, “While there are elements of that history which provoke profound sorrow, it is essential that we seek to understand them. As I said to Commonwealth leaders earlier this year, we must acknowledge the wrongs which have shaped our past if we are to unlock the power of our common future.” While Charles spoke President Ramaphosa, who sat next to him at the head table, nodded in agreement.
