Royal Family News – Coronation Firsts

Royal Family news reveals that the new monarch’s coronation will go down on Saturday, May 6, Buckingham Palace announced (via Country Living Magazine). On the same day, Charles’ wife, Camilla, Queen Consort will also be crowned alongside her husband in the historic ceremony, according to BBC.

Notably, this coronation will be the first such event to take place in Britain since 1902. It’s been 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II was crowned Queen.

Familial Symbolism of May 6

Some initial reports have suggested that King Charles’s coronation would take place around the same date as his mother’s coronation in 1953. That day was on June 2 but an earlier date was chosen for Charles’ day.

6th May was reportedly chosen in consultation with the government, the Church of England, and the Royal Household. And though the palace has yet to announce a reason for the May 6 date, there is reportedly symbolism around reference to family members.

For instance, George VI’s coronation went down in May. Also notable, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie, was born on May 6 and the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret’s wedding anniversary is also on the day.

Coronation to Respect Tradition While Looking Forward

Of course, Charles ascended the throne immediately following the death of his mother on September 8 but the official coronation will mark a symbolic celebration of his new reign. Millions throughout the world mourned the Queen’s death last month and the coronation of King Charles III will also likely attract large audiences across the globe.

It is yet unknown if there will be an extra UK bank holiday added or moved to the coronation weekend. There is reportedly a bank holiday scheduled for earlier that week in May, per Deadline. The late monarch’s funeral was a bank holiday for the entire UK.

Buckingham Palace indicated that the ceremony would be “rooted in longstanding traditions” but that it would also reflect the new monarch’s role in the present as well as “look towards the future.”

King Charles III Coronation To Be Smaller, More Diverse

According to BBC, the anointing, blessing, and consecration of the King will be presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The late Queen’s coronation lasted just short of three hours. However, royal sources are suggesting that Charles’ ceremony will be shortened yet be more diverse with a smaller guest list.

The former Queen was a 27-year-old when she was coronated. She also ascended the throne in the wake of her father King George VI’s death, with her coronation coming at a later date.
