Royal Family news reveals Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting their first daughter this summer, which means that little Archie is soon to be a big brother. The couple first shared their baby’s gender on their Oprah Winfrey interview in March, with Harry proclaiming his joy of having a boy and then expecting a girl. The growing family currently call a lush mansion in the elite neighborhood of Montecito California home, along with their 2-year-old son Archie and their cute dogs.
While there’s been a few guesses as to what the couple will call their daughter by the royal fans – most bets are on Diana and Philippa – here’s a list of girl names that the couple admires.
Possible Name Contenders For Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Daughter
As the days count down to the joyful day when the Sussexes will welcome a girl into their lives, we’re looking at the names the royals have hinted at as having a special place in their hearts.
During the time when the couple was actually expecting their first child Archie in 2019, they paid a visit to the town of Birkenhead and heard name suggestions from a group of school children.
After the Duchess and 7-year-old Megan Dudley realized that their friends both call them “Meg”, Dudley decided to offer a name suggestion for the royals should they have a daughter.
“I asked her whether she would call her baby Amy if she has a girl, and she said, ‘That’s a really pretty name, I like it. We’ll have to think about it,'” Dudley told reporters at the time. The Duchess actually quite liked the name, replying, “That’s a really pretty name, I like it. We’ll have to think about it.”
Harry also showed an interest in the name “Lily” at the same time, asking a mother how she spelled her daughter’s flower-inspired name.
In October 2018, the royal couple hopped on one of Melbourne, Australia’s iconic trams with student sustainability leaders for a short ride to South Melbourne Beach. 12-year-old Charlie Wolf saw the chance and grilled Meghan and Harry to reveal the name for the royal baby.
Meghan remained evasive, answering, “We’ve been given a long list of names from everyone, we’re going to sit down and have a look at them.”
In Melbourne, the couple also came across another name that may make it into their shortlist of baby girl names. The pair met a fan with a baby named Harriet – which is a feminine version of the name Harry. Meghan later told U.K. media outlet Sunday Express that Harry thought it was “a great name.”
Royal Family News – Support For Philippa Rises Since The Duke Of Edinburgh’s Death
Support for the name Philippa has grown in popularity as a possible name for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s unborn daughter. This is particularly boosted by the death of the Queen’s husband Prince Philip on April 9. Last month, U.K. gambling site Ladbrokes has seen Philippa grow as a popular prediction and has even cut the betting odds on the name 3/1.
“The support for baby Philippa is showing no signs of slowing down, and we’ve been forced to trim the odds again that it’s the name for Harry and Meghan’s daughter,” said Jessica O’Reilly of Ladbrokes.
Other names with strong support are the name, Diana, in honor of Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, who died when he was only 12 years old, and Elizabeth, after Prince Harry’s grandmother.
Another possible contender is Meghan Markle’s real name, Rachel. Fans believe that the former “Suits” actress and her husband could actually go for her real first name, even though she doesn’t go by the name anymore.
