To this end government officials claim that a multitude of controversial privacy rulings won by celebrities and other VIPS has actually decreased freedom of expression, a significant part of Britain’s democracy.

They allegedly think that the 1951 convention is being applied too liberally beyond the scope of its original intention, in areas ranging from free speech to immigration. This move comes on the heels of a controversial decision in a legal case between Meghan Markle and The Mail on Sunday.
In that case the Court of Appeal upheld a High Court decision that Meghan was entitled to, “a reasonable expectation of privacy,” after the outlet in 2019 published a letter she wrote to her estranged father Thomas Markle. The newspaper defended its right to publish the letter, with legal experts calling the judge’s decision in favor of Markle a dangerous precedent which benefits the, “rich and powerful.”
