Royal Family News: Prince Andrew Can Be Tried In Absentia For Sex Abuse Claims

Prince AndrewBritish royal family news reveals that even if Prince Andrew never returns to the US, he could face a trial over allegations made by alleged Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Roberts. And if he loses, he potentially faces up to $100 million dollars in damages if he loses according to legal experts.

Roberts brought charges against the son of Queen Elizabeth in New York federal court on Monday. According to her she was brought to the UK by pedophile financier Epstein to have sex with Andrew.

Roberts wants “significant” damages from Andrew after saying that she was sexually assaulted by him in three locations. According to her these locations were New York, the Caribbean and London in 2001 while she was 17 and he was 41.

Prince Andrew has repeatedly denied the allegations. He is under obligation to face the court, and the court can’t extradite him. Experts claim that he could still face a trial in the civil courts in his absence.

Royal Family News – Will Prince Andrew Return To The US?

Some experts think that Andrew might ask his lawyers to and get rid of Roberts’ lawsuit before that point. If a judge dismisses the case, Andrew will not need to attend but if a judge rules the case can go forward, a civil jury is likely to be called according to civil rights lawyer Aamer Anwar.

According to Anwar a trial could take place without Andrew present. In that scenario, if Roberts winds, Andrew could be forced to pay “millions and millions of dollars” in damages.

He also thinks that a judgment against Andrew might pressure UK authorities to take action in regard to the allegation that one of the sex abuse claims made took place in London.

Speculation has been thick since the case was brought that this latest move could eliminate any chance for Andrew to return to frontline royal duties.

Prince Andrew’s spokeswoman replied there was “no comment” in regard to the lawsuit. Later it was revealed that Prince Andrew does not have diplomatic immunity in this circumstance.

This means that he could brought before a court if and when he returns to the US or any of its territories.
Anwar told MailOnline, “The first thing is this is a civil case and under the terms of the extradition treaty, the U.S. Department of Justice can only extradite if there is a criminal prosecution.”

He added, “It’s not a matter that will simply go away. As I understand it, there is still an ongoing criminal investigation.”
