Royal Family News: Prince Charles Makes History With Kigali Victims

British royal family news shows that Prince Charles made history yesterday when he became the first member of the Royal Family to visit Rwanda. He and the future queen consort Camilla Parker Bowles landed in the capital of Kigali on Monday.

During the visit Charles is representing his mother Queen Elizabeth at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. It is the first time he does so since he inherited her role as head of the global Commonwealth in 2018.

At the same time it’s been reported that Charles, “faces a potentially awkward meeting with Boris Johnson following the revelation earlier this month that he had privately described the Prime Minister’s Rwandan asylum scheme as ‘appalling.’” Afterward Clarence House declined to comment on the matter.

Yesterday Charles and Camilla arrived via the RAF Voyager. He will now hold meetings about the key issues the countries of the Commonwealth are facing. These include climate change, economic development, opportunities for the young and gender equality. Today he will mark Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.

On Wednesday Charles will meet survivors and perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide which occurred in 1994, when, “hundreds of thousands of members of the Tutsi community were slaughtered in Rwanda by ethnic Hutu extremists.”

According to the Daily Mail, “Ahead of Chogm, Charles hailed the potential of the Commonwealth to make a difference on issues like climate change or providing opportunities for young people.”

He said, “Taking shared responsibility to solve problems like these means the Commonwealth has the potential to make a profound difference in the lives of its citizens – and, in so doing, to be an unparalleled force for good in our world.”

The queen has not visited Rwanda and thus Charles’ trip marks a historic first. He was encouraged by former Rwandan footballer Eric Murangwa to visit a church outside the capital where the remains of tens of thousands of genocide victims are buried.

Royal Family News – Charles Will Meet With Genocide Victims

Murangwa is the founder of the organization Football For Hope, Peace And Unity. It is said he was sheltered from the killings by his teammates. Charles made him an MBE in recognition of his efforts raising awareness of the genocide against the Tutsi.
