British royal family news divulges that it’s no secret that Prince Charles would love to put the United Kingdom monarchy on a diet. For years he has been associated with the idea of a “slimmed-down” monarchy. This would decrease the number of royals who receive public funds as well as carry out royal duties. In turn this reduction may help to assuage the image of the monarchy as a freeloading dinosaur, an institution whose time has come. Can Charles accomplish it?

It makes sense on paper but one expert points to the recent rise in popularity of one royal as a reason this may not be feasible.

He is referring to Sophie, Countess of Wessex who has stepped up since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ditched the family, and the coronavirus decimated the world.

Royal editor Camilla Tominey has called the Countess of Wessex, “the royal to watch,” saying that she is a rising star and it may force Prince Charles to include her in future royal events if the public expects or demands it.

According to Tominey, “It has been interesting to see how Buckingham Palace has been actively promoting the work of the Countess of Wessex in recent weeks.”

She added that Sophie fans will think it is about time! Nonetheless she thinks that, “there has been a definite attempt to elevate the mother of two’s profile in the wake of Megxit.”

“Does this mean that Prince Charles is having to re-evaluate his plan for a slimmed-down monarchy following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departure?”

“In a word, yes. While the Royals want to avoid a repeat of criticisms that there are too many ‘hangers-on’ on the palace balcony, there is a workload that needs to be met.”

So it would seem that Charles is between a rock and a hard place. Perhaps he can squeeze blood from a turnip? Either that or he must do more with less.
