British royal family news reveals the astounding dish that Prince George will not have to join the British Military ahead of ascending the throne. It is an epic break with centuries of tradition and is one more sign that the monarchy is desperate to modernize in order to stay relevant.
It has been expected that monarchs serve in the military before becoming king thus the new protocol for George shatters another royal tradition for The Firm.
Royal News: George Breaks Tradition
According to The Mail on Sunday “The second in line to the throne will be allowed to sidestep the usual stint with the Armed Forces if he wishes … leaving him free to shape his own destiny.” Imagine that, Prince Harry.
In the past, and at the current time, the monarch is Commander-in-Chief of Britain’s forces. Of course, the report merely indicates that George will be allowed to opt out of this tradition, and he may well choose not to.
Royal Family News: Will George Opt Out of the Military?
Historian Dominic Sandbrook wrote that it may be better for George to fall in line with the rest of his family since “The tradition of royals joining the Armed Forces, even for brief periods, lends crucial legitimacy to the monarchy.”
But a royal insider reports that “In theory, there is nothing to stop George from pursuing a career as an astronaut, for example, if that’s what he wants, and then becoming King later.”
For his part George was at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on Friday and appeared “delighted to sit in the cockpit and ‘flick some switches.’”
Royal Family News: Will Prince George Become King George?
The source went on to add that life in the monarchy is not as much of a fishbowl as it once was. About this speculation, historian Hugo Vickers replied: “This is significant because it shows that times are moving on. I’m all for people keeping up with the times providing they don’t throw tradition out of the window.”
He went on to note that George’s grandfather King Charles served in the Navy in the 1970s: “It showed the country that he was gainfully employed … Military service allows members of the Royal Family to have a sense of normal life, grants them a certain amount of freedom and teaches them all sorts of timekeeping and presentation skills which prove to be important for Royal duties.”
And, in what may have been a swipe at Prince Harry, he noted that “What clearly doesn’t work are those cases where members of the Royal Family go into commercial ventures. That always goes wrong.”
