As reported by NBC, Queen Elizabeth’s grandson has a suit against Associated Newspapers which is the publisher of the UK’s Mail on Sunday. The former senior royal claims that the article, published in February, libeled him in regard to his wrangling to have the same security in the UK as that given to his grandmother.
Royal Family News: Harry Is Equal to the Queen?
Harry claimed that because his protection was yanked after he ran away from the palace, he was no longer safe in the UK. According to him, the article, “alleged he had tried to keep secret details of his legal fight to reinstate his police protection, and that his aides had then tried to put a positive spin on it.”
In response, Associated Newspapers denied that the article was libelous. In June a preliminary hearing was held to determine, “what a reader would conclude was the ‘natural and ordinary’ meaning of the Mail story.”
The judge, Matthew Nicklin, ruled: “I am satisfied that these meanings are defamatory at common law.” Score one for the man formerly known as Prince, Harry.
Royal Family News: Is Harry Litigious?
The judge noted that he believes that the article indicated that, “Prince Harry had sought far-reaching and unjustifiably wide confidentiality restrictions and was responsible for statements put out on his behalf, rather than his public relations team as the paper had argued.”
Thus, according to the judge, “A reader would also conclude the prince was responsible for attempting to mislead and confuse the public as to the true position.”
Royal Family News: Will Harry Prevail in Court?
What will Harry do next given the ruling? That remains to be seen but given Harry’s track record for legal action, it is not a stretch to believe he will continue his legal wranglings.
