Royal Family News: Prince Philip Was Bedridden By Stress After Becoming The Queen’s Consort?

British royal family news reveals that Prince Philip has a reputation as a loyal subject to the crown and a dedicated spouse to his wife Queen Elizabeth of England. But apparently, that wasn’t always the case for the 99-year old Prince Philip. After he became the consort to the queen he had a bit of an adjustment period.

Royal Family News: Prince Philip Struggled To Adapt To Life As A Working Royal

Author Bryan Kozlowski has written Long Live the Queen! 13 Rules for Living from Britain’s Longest Reigning Monarch, and in it he writes that poor Philip was so unhappy during the first year he was consort that he became ill and was bedridden for three weeks.

“He came down with a severe case of jaundice—a condition often linked with stress and depression—and spent three agonizing weeks in a dark room trying to recover,” Kozlowski writes.

There is no doubt that that being a member of the royal family is not for everyone, and as in the case of Meghan Markle, it is an unacquired taste. There is a tremendous amount of sacrifice required both professional and personal. For Prince Harry and wife Meghan, neither were willing to toe the line, a decision that is said to have caused Philip great consternation.

Marrying Into The Royal Family Is A Lifestyle Not Everyone Is Prepared To Accept

Philip’s journey was complicated by the fact that he had to give up his military life in the Royal Navy and Kozlowski claims that having to do so made Philip physically ill.

In the book Long Live the Queen! 13 Rules for Living from Britain’s Longest Reigning Monarch, the author writes, “Beginning royal life with energetic purpose, enjoying a fulfilling and quickly advancing career in the Royal Navy, the King’s untimely death drastically rerouted those plans.”

And so Philip was forced to put, “his naval life on permanent hold, he became the Queen’s consort, a vacuously vague position Philip once described as making him feel more like ‘a bloody amoeba’ than a man.”

The author goes on to say that, “Without a definable role (or one he regarded as terribly important), Philip became decidedly mopey, quick-tempered, and eventually seriously unwell. In his first year as consort, he came down with a severe case of jaundice—a condition often linked with stress and depression—and spent three agonizing weeks in a dark room trying to recover.”

If that is the case, then Philip has come a long way! He is regarded with respect and esteem for the way he has supported the queen throughout her reign and he deserves kudos for staying the course unlike his grandson Harry who simply got going when the going got tough.
