Before she passed, James inspired the UK through her podcast as well as her blog and social media. Through these platforms she documented her experience with bowel cancer, using the handle @Bowelbabe.
Deborah James Was An Inspiration
James’ Bowelbabe Fund has raised an incredible £7 million to date and she was awarded a Damehood for her tireless work to raise awareness of the disease.
Shortly before her death, Prince William visited with James and her family in order to present the Damehood in person. James’ husband is now sharing details of the moving visit.
In an interview with The Times Sebastien Bowen said, “There was the time I opened the door to Prince William, who had come to give
Deborah a damehood. He felt like a friend but he was the future king. That was bizarre. He was so relaxed; he came and sat down in the garden and had champagne with the family.”

The widower added that Prince William had special and heartfelt advice for the couple’s children, Hugo and Eloise. According to the grieving gentleman, William shared his take on grief, no doubt informed by his own loss. William was still a teen when his mother Princess Diana died in a tragic car accident in Paris.
Sebastien Bowen recalled, “He’s obviously been through similar grief with the loss of his mother, so he gave powerful advice to the children that will stay with them forever.”
But William also showed his congenial side, putting the family at ease, even cracking a joke after his arrival.
Prince William – Will One Day Be King
William made the whole family laugh when he noted that there were several glasses of alcohol in front of James. The widower noted, “Deborah had a glass of champagne, a glass of wine and a glass of sherry in front of her. She hadn’t been allowed a drink for months and the first thing William said was, ‘I’m glad to see you are triple parked.’ That was an immediate ice-breaker.”
Before her passing James herself said of the magical meetup: “It’s quite surreal having a royal pop in at home, and yes you can imagine the cleaning antics and preparation went off the scale — but it was all irrelevant because William was so kind and he put us all at ease.”
