Royal Family News: Prince William Could Rebel Against Prince Charles Over The Monarchy’s Ivory Collection

British royal family news reveals that a royal spat may be simmering and about to erupt between Prince William and Prince Charles. Both have expressed a love for the environment, but they are reportedly at odds against something that could undermine their legacies.

Buckingham Palace has an extensive ivory collection which is the source of public controversy, and Prince William has made his negative feelings about the collection well known.

William just launched the Earthshot Prize with imminent conservationist Sir David Attenborough. Prizes worth £50million will be awarded to individuals and groups who deliver eco-friendly solutions to the world’s greatest environmental problems over the next ten years.

Additionally, William was featured in the ITV documentary Prince William — A Planet for Us All earlier this year. In the documentary he went into an ivory store in Tanzania and got emotional when he saw a pile of 43,000 ivory tusks. Tusks have a street value of £50million there, and William was shown impounded ivory.

William is reported to have told zoologist and family friend Jane Goodall that he wants to, “see all the ivory owned by Buckingham Palace destroyed.”

This Sentiment Was Apparently Seen As Wild And Rash By Prince Charles.

According to royal author Robert Jobson, Charles was caught off guard by William’s comment, which likely was made off the cuff in a family that prides itself on vetting every single statement. Jobson said that the two men had a, “frank exchange of views,” over the statement that some might have thought reflected badly on the Palace.

Jobson recalled, “Charles told William he was being “naïve” and he should have chosen his words more carefully.

He added, “While appreciating his son’s sentiment, Charles believes there is a vast difference between calling for action against illegal traders now and ordering Buckingham Palace to rid itself of an enormously important and historical collection of artefacts that form part of the Royal Collection Trust.”

The Palace’s ivory collection includes a 19th Century Indian throne with a footstool, and a pair of 18th Century seven-story pagodas. According to Jonson, William’s emotions are so strong on the matter, “many who know William and his stubborn streak … believe he will take some form of action when he becomes King, despite his father’s protestations.”
