Prince William will represent the Queen as Lord High Commissioner at the Annual General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, which will be held online in May.
William is known as the Earl of Strathearn in Scotland and he will open and close the sessions of the Assembly as well as perform multiple in his role as Lord High Commissioner.
Royal Family News – Prince William Has A New Appointment
In the present day Scotland is under tremendous pressure after the SNP announced its plan for another independence referendum, following one in 2014. In short, the citizens are being asked: should Scotland be an independent country, and voting could be extended to include over 16s, who are believed to favor independence.
According to the present bill, the vote should be held in the first half of the Parliament due to be elected in May; the SNP has said it could take place as early as this year.
Nicola Sturgeon chose to publish the bill today in what was reported to be a bid to distract from the controversial Alex Salmond questions surrounding her office.
Royal Family News – Will Scotland Become Independent?
Prince William also served as Lord High Commissioner in 2020. Each year the Queen appoints a representative, with Prince Charles, Princess Anne and the Earl of Wessex previously serving in the position that William now has. It is not always held by a member of the Royal Family and the choice is made with the advice of the Scottish First Minister and Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Since the 16th century monarchs have sworn to maintain the Church of Scotland. This was codified in the 1707 Act of Union between England and Scotland which stated the duty to, “preserve the settlement of the true Protestant religion as established by the laws made in Scotland.”
Royal Family News – Prince William Face A Huge Task
In April, William wrote to the Right Reverend Colin Sinclair, the outgoing moderator of the Assembly, praising the work of the Church of Scotland: “It is heartening to see how the Church of Scotland, like so many other faith communities across the country, is re-inventing itself digitally to continue providing worship, support and guidance for your congregations.”
