The Queen Delegates Prince William To Represent Her Internationally For The First Time
Along with royals from different countries around the world, Prince William traveled to the United Arab Emirates to pay respects to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who passed away Friday aged 73.
The U.K. embassy in the UAE reported that the royal “met with HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan today to pay his sincere condolences following the death of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. HRH also offered his warmest congratulations to HH on his appointment as President of the United Arab Emirates.”
This is the first time that the Duke of Cambridge has traveled internationally to pay respects to a foreign ruler. Typically, if the Queen is unable to attend, her son and heir, Prince Charles usually steps in. However, Prince Charles and Camilla are set to undertake a royal tour of Canada on Tuesday, May 17, so the conflict of scheduling made it impossible for him to take up the appointment.
The Queen has mostly been out of the public eye this year as a result of her ongoing mobility issues. As she rarely attends in-person engagements these days, Prince William’s profile within the Royal Family keeps growing.
Last week, he attended the State Opening of Parliament alongside his father for the first time.
The Queen’s Poignant Letter To The Late Arab Monarch’s Brother
On Friday, Queen Elizabeth, who has formerly met the late Middle Eastern monarch, wrote a letter to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed expressing her condolences, writing, “Your distinguished brother devoted his life to serving the people of the United Arab Emirates and his relationship with its allies and friends.”
She continued, “He will be long remembered by all who work for regional stability, understanding between nations and between faiths, and for the conservation cause. I offer Your Highness my sincere condolences and I extend my sympathy to the people of the United Arab Emirates.”
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed succeeded his half-brother Sheikh Khalifa as President of the UAE. The brothers are both part of the Al Nahyan royal family, one of the richest royal families in the world. According to Forbes, the family is valued at $150 billion as of 2009.
Prince William was one of several foreign royals that traveled to UAE this week, including Belgium’s King Philippe, Spain’s King Felipe, Jordan’s King Abdullah, Bahrain’s King Hamad and Prince Salman, Morocco’s Prince Moulay, and Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri.
In February 2022, during his first ever visit to the Gulf country, William met with Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed.
